PLUMMER VINSON SYNDROME

                   It is a precancerous condition in which there is a severe spasm of circular muscle fibre at the cricopharyngeal sphincter level or pharyngo-oesophageal junction & it is associated with development of postcricoid web.

Aetiopathogenesis :

1.Aetiology is unknown .
2.It is seen in women who have anxiety & worry .
3.As a result of the spasm & web ,dysplasia results & leads to features of anaemia later.

Clinical features :

1.Women in the middle age group are affected .
2.Increasing dysphagia for solids & liquids due to spasm .
3.Features of anaemia - pallor, stomatitis ,ulcerations , bald tongue ,splenomegaly.
4.Cyanosis ,choking ,respiratory tract infection.

Treatment :

1.Reassurance
2.Improving anaemia-Iron tablets or blood transfusion & correction of nutritional deficiencies.
3.Regular dilatation by using gum elastic bougies
